I'm gathering all of my resources to put myself back out there(portfolio-wise.) And I'm wondering how to represent time spent at a practice. How does one show competency in CD's and related technical areas? How do I show that I've been working for a year? We don't produce blinging presentations. I've worked on bits of big projects(libraries and schools) and comprehensively on small projects(garage additions and a carriage house.) I assume that Graham is the resident expert here since he's worked at about 18 firms now.

I have been wondering about this as well, i have sort of made an effort to generate perspectives that i could use--but am not sure i want to include any professional work. I probably should, but it's hard for me to put any of this forth as "real". I don't feel responsible for any of it, really.

I printed entire sets of CDs of 2 projects that I worked on at HGA. Only at 8.5x11 but I treated these as an appendix to my "pretty portfolio".
It worked well for me this way because I could work through the more exciting aspect of my portfolio, and then wrap it up by looking at the more detailed work that I had produced. This may have been a different situation because of the way we worked at HGA.
The one other thing that I have noticed in the interviews following HGA (my first job) is that they are more focused on talking.
I don't know... maybe this helps... it probably doesn't.

Graham forgot to mention that he spiral bound and put a cover on his printed set. This is the same thing he did for the pretty stuff and it worked well because, like he said, the CDs became an appendix for the other book.

Or better yet... pass on the portfolio, and just join me at OPX. I think that we could get you a job just by telling the principles how awesome you are. There's an empty workstation beside me, we could set up mirrors so that we could watch each other out of the corner of our eyes.

a friend recently told me she also took two sets of CD's with her, but that "CD's shouldn't go in the portfolio". This seems pretty valid to me--but I am still of the opinion that a portfolio (atleast mine,) should not showcase individual skills so much as "good projects" whenever possible. I'm working on one or two projects pages from work, which i will post to get feedback.
